A Glimpse Into Fairlawn's Artistic Talent!

Meet Jean Giles from Perfect Peace Pillows..
My husband and I work together on Perfect Peace Pillows.  He is a retired Engineer and I am a semi-retired licensed social worker.
I have worked on crafts for years as a hobby, but this Avant-Garde Art and Craft Show will be our first time working together.  Our Perfect Peace Pillows are designed to inspire and bring a smile to all who see them.

We want to be a blessing to others.

Meet Kelsey Snyder from The Small Village...
I was born and raised in Ohio. When I got married, my husband (Chris) and I travelled a lot for his career. We started our married life living on the Navajo Reservation in Arizona for three years and then moved to Iowa for two years. After being away from home for five years, and having two children, we decided to move back to our home state of Ohio. I am now the mother of three children, who are my greatest blessings.

My business, The Small Village is fairly new. I have always loved crafting and decorating, but not until recently did I decide to take the plunge and turn my hobby into a business. I started selling my items in December of 2016.
This will be my first Avant-Garde craft show. This is actually my very first craft show that I will be attending as a vendor!

Being a mother inspires me to create. I love the "sisterhood" of motherhood, and that kind of community is what inspires me to make the signs and tees that I do.
I fell in love with crafting when I fell in love with decorating my home. We couldn't always afford home decor at the stores, so I always made my own. I love restoring an old piece of furniture or hanging a freshly painted sign above my sink. It honestly brings me so much joy to see my house turn into a home, because of my own two hands.

I discovered my talent after a lot of trial and error. I worked hard to find out what works and what doesn't. Many times, that meant learning from my mistakes. It wasn't something that came natural, but something that I worked for.

My creative process is a learning experience. I'm always finding new things to try and new materials to use. Having products that have the very best quality is very important to me. I put a lot of time and effort perfecting my skill.
In five years, I would love to have my own storefront! I'd love to have my own store that focused on home decor and clothing, with my main audience being women and mothers. I want to create a special place where women can come together and fellowship over a cup of coffee.

The message behind The Small Village is that everyone needs a village. It takes a village to raise a child right? Whether it be scripture on a sign, a funny graphic on a tee, or a relationship built with my customers...something small can be an encouragement to fellow women and mothers.

Meet Linda Carpenter from Tole Antiques...
Hi! I'm Linda Carpenter. This is my first avant-garde show. I am a decorative painter. I paint on wood, metal, glass, etc. I started taking painting classes when my children were toddlers and have been painting ever since. My daughter just turned 40 last December, so that gives you an idea how long it has been! My first career was as a registered nurse working in Cardiac Intensive Care. I stopped working as a nurse when my children were born and looked for something less stressful to do!

I also taught decorative painting for about 15 years and began doing shows. You can only have so many painted things at home! About 7 years ago a friend talked me into making a beaded bracelet and I loved that too! I didn't want to give up either one.--So I began selling both.
I decided last year that maybe it was time for me to stop all my art work and do other things. That lasted one year and I really missed it. I was talking to a friend of mine who said to me "If God gave you a gift, then you should never give it up unless you have to."

So here I am, back painting and making jewelry. I love making people happy when they find something of mine that they love, and it is also therapy for me. It is easy to get lost in your art work and leave any other problems behind for a little while!

I am very much looking forward to May 13th in Fairlawn!

Meet Christine Hespen from The Chris Co...
I'm 34 years old, born and raised in CLE on the eastside.  I obtained a Fine Arts degree from BGSU in 2004, with a focus in photography.  Since college I've been working in Corporate America and working in the arts as a hobby. I've been creating jewelry for about 10+ or so years now.

This will be my third Avant-Garde Art & Craft Show!

What inspires me to create.. color! Bright, vivid color that surrounds us in this world truly is what inspires me.
How I got into my craft.. My very first job was at a bead store in Beachwood Place back when I was 14 years old.  My love for jewelry kicked off from that job. I found out I had talent when it came to making jewelry when I watched what others created and tried to copy their pieces.  Once I started making variations of what I saw others doing, I realized it came easy to me.

My creative process.. I try not to over think a piece....when that happens I get restless and end up overthinking it to death.  I just start working on a piece, and let it flow.
Where I see myself in 5 years.. I really enjoy selling at the spring and fall craft shows in Cleveland, someday I would like to sell in local boutiques.

The message behind my work.. Sometimes simplicity is best.  Sometimes there simply isn't a message, and that's okay!

Meet Marti McHugh-Curtis from ArtyMarti Designs...
Hello all!  I am Marti of ArtyMarti Designs.  I live in Chagrin Falls, OH with my husband, Keith, who is endlessly patient with all the clutter than goes hand in hand with creativity!  I have been greatly interested in art, photography, lettering, writing, and just about any other creative field, since I was a very young child.  I remember the frustration at age 9, of lying in the grass, trying to focus close-up on a flower, with an Instamatic Kodak that took flash cubes…anyone remember those??  Anyway, as the years passed, I spent time studying at both Miami University and Kent State University in the art departments.  My studies ranged from wallpaper and fabric design, to calligraphy, jewelry & metals, & photography.  However, once I was married and had the first two of my four children, photography seemed the best fit, both as a creative outlet, and also a way that I could work part time.  I began entering contests, became an active member of the Chagrin Valley Camera Club, and was eventually recruited as a free-lance photographer for the Chagrin Valley Times.  This worked perfectly with the demands of an active family; as by then I had one daughter and three sons.  I continued this work for about nine years, and felt the urge to try something different at that point.  As I had already been making many of my own greeting cards for years, by applying photos I had taken to card stock, it seemed like a perfectly natural transition for me to attempt to make this endeavor into a small business, and find a way to “update” the card style.
I registered the name ArtyMarti Designs in August of 2015, and have been busy building the business and learning the ups and downs of marketing one’s own product.  I have had Open Houses, have some cards in local shops, as well as in a store in the Chautauqua Institution in New York state.  I participated in my first “tent event” at the end of last summer, and just recently discovered the Avant-Garde Craft Shows.  The Fairlawn show will be my second Avant-Garde Show, and I have been busy planning the best ways to display my product.  Being the day before Mother’s Day, I will have some great gift baskets made up, and I hope you will check them out!
Many things have inspired me to create.  I have always been drawn to beautiful details of things that I see.  I love traveling, and have amassed a huge collection of photos from those travels, that I now find to be a virtual catalog for me to draw from for my card designs.  I sometimes use “straight” photography, and at other times implement “effects” on my photographs to change their appearance to a more graphic or painterly style.  I have approximately 175 different card designs currently, ranging from old cars and trucks, animals, botanicals, barns, antiques & architecture, to anything interesting that catches my eye!  At first I made all of my cards blank inside, and found that many people were requesting cards with verses.  As I enjoy writing as well, I embraced the challenge of creating verses that connected well with the photos on the cards. I now offer many cards with verses for varied occasions, as well as a large stock of blank cards for the customers that enjoy writing their own.
At the Fairlawn show, I will have some interesting gift “baskets” made up of assortments of custom greeting cards, pens, and postage stamps in pretty containers of some kind, perfect for a Mother’s Day gift or birthday gift.  This may be an especially nice present for an older mom, aunt or grandma, who can’t easily get out the way they used to, but still enjoys writing notes and cards to people they know & love.  I hope you’ll check them out!  I will also have some enlargements, framed or matted, of several of the photos featured on my cards.
I do want to let people know that at this time I am only able to accept checks and cash.  Haven’t made the big move to accepting credit cards yet, but probably will need to check that option out soon!

I am in a constant state of learning, as I go through this process of creating and selling my art.  I am always open to hearing suggestions of what particular items people would like to see on a card, that I have not yet made.  My greatest satisfaction comes when a customer truly connects with a particular photo, and tells me the memories it brings to them, or when they tell me the verse I wrote perfectly conveys what they would like to say to someone.  I am very much looking forward to this new adventure, and hope that I will meet many of you soon!

Meet Bethany Wilson from Family 365...
Bethany, owner of Family 365. Family 365 is a small business dedicated to the importance of family time through creative outlets. We utilize multimedia art, photography, and books to inspire artistic time spent with family.

I've written, drawn pictures, and taken photo's since I was a child but never did anything with it until the last few years. This will be my first show with Avant-Garde.

What inspires me to create is almost everything in nature, family, friends...
How I discovered my talent.. I feel like I was always creative but never fully used it until the last few years. Painting has become a favorite hobby.

My creative process... I kind of just look at different material and can creatively see how they piece together to form something awesome. I like to mix as much media as I can.

My five year plan.. This will probably always be a small side business. I enjoy making personalized pieces for families.
The message behind my work is that I want people to enjoy the beauty of the world and see how they can interpret it into their own families.

Fairlawn, it's Show Week!

Meet Candice Adams from The Haute Bohemian
Hello, my name is Candice Adams and I live in North Royalton with my husband and dog Levi.   I graduated from the University of Akron in 2011 and I am a high school intervention specialist for Lorain City Schools.  During the summer of 2016 I decided to design and create jewelry with the goal of opening an Etsy shop.
This will be my third Avant-Garde Art and Craft Show and I am very excited!  I am a lover of jewelry and fashion, which sometimes gets me into trouble with my husband!!  I began experimenting with jewelry making when I was 10 years old.   Every summer I would visit family in Michigan and I would spend time with my older cousin creating jewelry using seed beads.  I have amazing memories of visiting a bead store that had me hooked on the jewelry making scene.
My creative process comes from being inspired by nature.   When I was younger I collected rocks and gems and loved to explore caves.  Every piece of my jewelry incorporates a natural or semi-precious stone which reflects my love for nature.  My jewelry can best be described as having a bohemian/ free spirited style, which inspired my Etsy shop name, The Haute Bohemian.
I really enjoy creating jewelry that is one of a kind and hope to continue for years to come. My ultimate goal is to learn to solder so I can create rings.  I have several of my items located at Salty Not Sweet on West 25th Street in Ohio City and at Village Square Antiques in Lodi. I hope you like what you see and stop by to see me at the next Avant-Garde Art Craft Show!

Meet Brittany Christmas from The White Rabbit...
I'm Brittany. I graduated from Kent State with a degree in English. I started crafting as a kid. In the last four years I've put together my own handmade business, The White Rabbit. When I'm not working on creations for The White Rabbit you can usually find me spending time with my husband, David and our rabbit, Chance. I've been doing craft shows for about five years now. This will be my third Avant-Garde Art & Craft Show.
I'm usually inspired to create by the things happening around me.

How I got into my craft.. My grandma taught me how to crochet when I was in elementary school. For a long time that was mainly what I did as far as crafting. After I started selling at shows I started to branch out into other crafts.

How I discovered my creative process... Through trial and error, honestly. I've had a lot of failed craft attempts and mishaps over the years. It takes awhile sometimes to find the "right" thing for you, but I think I finally have. My creative process, more often than not, is organized chaos. I work the best under pressure. Organized chaos has proven to provide me with just enough pressure to be productive and have good results.
In five years I hope to see The White Rabbit grow. I'd love to have my work in more local shops and still be participating in handmade events.

The message behind my work is individuality. I try to create products that people can use to decorate their personal space and express themselves. Too often we find ourselves all working and living in cookie cutter circumstances, so I like to make small items that can bring individuality and happiness to people.

Meet Polly Reiheld from Planet Polly...
I am a creative soul, animal lover, and part-time cat rescuer who lives in Akron, OH with my husband and – you guessed it – some cats!  We also have a condo in St. Petersburg, FL which is where I collect the shells for my jewelry. I have been having fun making jewelry for a couple of years and have been selling on Etsy since 2016.  The Strongsville Show will be the first Avant-Garde show for myself and my table-mate (and fellow animal-lover) Sarah Barford – we are looking forward to it!
I have a BA in Graphic Design and an MA in Arts Administration. I have always seen the world artistically through colors, shapes, ideas, music and words…creating as well as supporting the arts is very important to me. I love the idea of recycling and repurposing things to create new, usable and/or wearable items, and look forward to “rescuing” objects to turn them into something that can be appreciated in new and different ways.
I began making bracelets from pop tabs because I saw the potential for recycling and creating in a way I had not seen before – my hand-painted bracelets are colorful, unique and versatile. They can be worn as an earth-friendly statement piece or jazzed up with dangling charms for an evening out. The concept of using shells for earrings was born when we started spending time walking the beautiful beaches in FL. I began to notice that many of the smaller shells already had holes in them – perfect for my distinctive, lightweight, one-of-a-kind earrings that creatively capture the beauty of the ocean and the spirit of a beach vacation!
My Etsy shop is named Planet Polly because I believe that we all have the potential – and responsibility - to respect and save our planet and all living things through our words, deeds and actions. I donate proceeds of my sales to animal rescue and environmental groups because their causes are near and dear to my heart, and giving back is a way to pay it forward.

Fairlawn Spring Show Coming to Town!

Meet Dick and Linda Byrd from The Byrd House...
This is the first Avant-Garde Craft show for Dick and Linda Byrd. They began doing craft shows about 18 years ago when they set up at the Atwood Fall Festival near Carrollton, Ohio. For many years this 3-day show was the only show they did. Dick made free-standing hutches. shelves, corner cupboards, side tables, and bookcases, as well as many smaller wooden items.  Dick was working at a full-time job, so this was more like an enjoyable hobby for them.
As Dick and Linda reached their “Medicare” years, they realized that lugging the heavy bookcases and cupboards to the show was becoming a chore, so Dick began looking for other things to make in his wood shop - smaller items easier to carry.  He began making bandsaw boxes, cheese slicers, cutting boards, wine racks, wine bottle balances, jewelry boxes, and then his special wooden bowls. All the items are made with a variety of woods and then carefully finished. These new items have been very well received - so much that the Byrds have added 5 or 6 new shows to their calendar. Dick loves to create these unique items, and he works in his shop every day to keep up with the shows and the demand from word-of-mouth interest.
Dick’s creative talent started in a high school wood shop over 50 years ago, and it has really become his passion in the past few years.
Sales have taken Dick’s products into several states and around the world to Norway, Iceland, Australia, Slovakia, and most notably Italy, to an archbishop in the Vatican. His biggest challenge was an order for 140 bowls to be given as client Chistmas gifts. He filled the order and the gifts were much appreciated.

Meet Pamela Lemons from Mostly Maille...
My name is Pamela Lemons and I am the owner/designer of Mostly Maille.  I make fine chainmaille and fused Argentium(r) Silver jewelry.  I work from my home studio, formerly our guest bedroom.  My husband suggested that we move the guest bed to my daughter's room when no one could use it due to all my various metalworking, display, and shipping supplies piled on it.  We moved the bed, I added a few more work spaces, and my studio was born!

I've always been pretty crafty and started making jewelry around 2004-2005.  One of my beading magazines had instructions on how to make a simple chainmaille bracelet (a 2-in-1 weave) with big hole beads.  I was instantly hooked!  My chainmaille obsession began and grew.  I played with Aluminum and Copper jump rings first as they are inexpensive.  Once I became experienced with those metals, I tried other metals.  One of the metals I learned about during my experimentation period was Argentium(r) Silver, a newer alloy of sterling silver.  (Read more about Argentium(r) below.)  I also use Gold Filled and Rose Gold Filled metals in my chainmaille jewelry.  Besides using Argentium(r) for my chainmaille jump rings, I discovered the alloy's combination of fine Silver, Copper, and Germanium can be fused to itself with yellow flux and a torch.  I can bend wire and sheet metal Argentium(r) and fuse it together into just about any design I want.  I've been experimenting with PMC (Precious Metal Clay), too.  It's so fun to play with clay, heat it, and have it turn into metal.  I can't wait to start adding PMC to my chainmaille and fused Argentium(r) designs!

[About Argentium(r) Silver: Argentium(r) has more fine silver (93.5% vs the usual 92.5%), the silver is reclaimed or recycled rather than newly mined, has less Copper, and an element called Germanium.  When you gently heat Argentium(r), the Germanium rises to the surface of the metal as an oxide (Germanium Oxide).  This oxide layer helps keep the Copper from tarnishing and turning the metal black.  When Argentium(r) tarnishes, it turns a golden yellow-brown rather than black, and the tarnish can be wiped away with Windex and a soft cloth.  It's an amazing metal!  Argentium(r) also does not require solder to connect pieces together.  The alloy's combination of fine Silver, Copper, and Germanium can be fused to itself with just yellow flux and a torch.]
What inspires me.. My customers give me some of the best ideas.  Whether it's size preferences, metal preferences, or design suggestions, the ideas that my customers come up with have become some of my best selling pieces.

As much as I like my jewelry to be symmetrical, my creative process is very messy.  It takes a lot of different ring sizes to create my designs, and I don't always put the rings back where they belong if I don't use them.
In 5 years, I would like to expand to participating in shows beyond Ohio and Michigan.  Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky, Tennessee, and Pennsylvania are all on my radar.  My husband has plans to retire around that time, so it's possible he'll become my roadie and traveling companion.  My online store, www.MostlyMaille.com, should be firmly established within 5 years, too.

The message behind my work is that quality jewelry can be affordable.  I do everything I can to make my jewelry affordable for my customers.  I want them to buy it, take it home, and enjoy wearing it.

Meet Barb Hubert from Eagle Wings Art...
Hi, my name is Barb Hubert and I am a retired Cat Scan Tech for over 5 years now and I was lost!  I was looking for a purpose and hobby after I retired, and I thought I would try watercolor, because I’ve always loved these paintings.  After just 1 year with a friend/teacher, I took off and now after only 5 years and never painting a day before that, have over 200 + original watercolor paintings, plus prints of my paintings and print blank notecards.  I feel this is a gift that God has given me, so I give back to Him!  40% of my profits go to help, The Cleveland Pregnancy Center or the Bible League Int’l.  I love painting, using different mediums, like real leaves, salt, saran wrap and anything else to make my paintings different and unique! I love to experiment!  I am inspired by all of nature around me, and I marvel at the works of God! I, always, always have a painting in process! I can see a scene as I drive along somewhere and I want to paint it!  You will find birds, animals, owls, landscapes, children’s art, modern and abstract art from my business, plus I will have new and beautiful spring and summer birds and floral paintings!
I’m putting a lot of work and effort into building my business, as I feel this is one of my purposes and gifts God has given me.  I hope my business grows, and I can just give back more to God!
I have participated in many previous Avant-Garde shows and love how they are advertised, and the wide variety of customers they bring in! I plan on being in most of the Spring Avant-Garde Shows!  Hope to see you there!

Meet Becky Rook from B Rook Creations...
My name is Becky Rook - I was born in Youngstown, OH - Soon to be 60 years of age and do not act or look it! (I inherited that from my mom and her mom) I just moved back to the area from CO were I have family that lives out there. My craft business really took off out their. Doing Farmers Markets, Weddings, and Art Fairs! You can say that I left my mark there and am still getting calls to come back!!!!!

I have been crafting for as long as I can remember. I started out learning from my Grammy,  I started out on how to make those famous pot holders!! And then the rest is history. Between her and my mom (which was her mother) I learned quite a lot..... and am thankful for every minute that I had with both of them.
What inspires me.. Knowing that people can have a little part of me! It's nice to create something, and know that it was made right here in America! I also love to see the look on someone's face when they buy something of mine and know that it will go to a home that someone is appreciative of what it took to make that!  love working with my hands, and seeing what becomes of what ever I'm making!

How I got into my craft.. I have tried a lot of differ ant things. Between my Grammy and my mom, (and teaching myself) that is where it began.
My creative process.. Trial and error and a lot of thinking things through. Seeing what will work and what won't.

The message behind my work.. Like my business cards say - "Unique - Raw - Edgy - I do not make just one of an item - When you come to my table, I have a shop of differ ant items that you can choose from, not just one thing. That's why I push myself to learn as much as I can. Also when I make my items, I make them to sell, it is all from scratch. And I put soooo much pride in my work! If I would not buy it, I would not want someone else too!
