It's Show Time Fairlawn Vendors!

Meet Michael Peskar from Peskar's Leather Goods....
My name is Mike and I live in Parma. I have a son who will graduate in 2019. I'm just starting out with my crafting business and I am excited that Avant-Garde will be my first craft show. My son inspired me to start my crafting business to help save for his college. I make handmade leather tassels and woven leather key rings. I am working on adding leather wallets and other small leather goods. All my items are made with premium quality Horween Leather. In five years I will be retired from my day job and I want to be doing this full time.

Meet Debi Salzman from Debi's Doodles...
I am a teacher by profession. I did my first piece at a friend’s birthday party 5 years ago. I did not like it at all! I didn’t give it a fair chance, so I went back. Now, I think of pieces in my dreams! I have done 3 Avant-Garde shows.
I love colorful, bright pieces. I am not afraid to mix various colors that would normally not be put together.
In glass, everything looks beautiful together. Practice helped me become more confident. I usually have an idea of a piece I want to make. I then choose colors. I hem and haw mixing and matching. I then decide if the piece will be squares, circles, mosaic etc. I then cut the glass and start creating. As I learned, most things you have to give a second chance. I am so glad I did. I love glass fusing!

Meet Lindsay from Wanderer Lindsay Photography...
I use imagery and writing to promote mindfulness and focus on the day-by-day journey of life. This helps remove stress and anxiety by showcasing "the little things" that provide peace and inspiration, which should be taken to heart as we face society's limiting beliefs. It is the same peace and inspiration that I used to overcome my own anxiety. My photography primarily consists of the topics of nature and travel, but with a different light as the focus is on the finer details like flowers or doors of infrastructure, instead of the general landscape and tourist imagery. I have been creating since February of 2017 and this will be my first Avant-Garde Art & Craft Show. I am inspired to create by my need to help others, the act of being mindful, and the world itself that is full of ideas and inspiration everywhere you look!
I have always been a creative for as long as I can remember.  I draw, sew, write, craft, anything and everything really.  Photography and writing stand out to me the most because they have impacted my life the most thus far. I discovered my talent while studying abroad in Germany in the fall of 2013.  The amount of pictures I took baffled my family, and a number of them were stunning to them because they were more artistic and meaningful than the normal tourist photos.  Ever since then, I immersed myself in my love for capturing the moments around me.

I try to have my camera with me every time I go out.  I will find a place to travel to or visit, and then take in the surroundings as I explore and practice mindfulness.  Practicing mindfulness, and always enjoying the smaller things in life, are how I end up finding subjects to capture with my camera, especially if they are particularly stunning to me, or make me feel a strong emotion towards it.  I keep record of the subject and what happened while observing it and taking a picture, so that I can then use those feelings to link the photography to messages and narratives that help overcome anxiety with mindfulness/law of attraction.  In doing this, I have been told that my work is very therapeutic.
In five years, I see myself as a full-time creative that impacts the lives of others to a great extent, and in a very positive way. The message behind my work is to LIVE. Live in a way that makes your heart and personality sing.  Live by doing what makes you feel alive.  Anxiety is a huge enemy to the public, and a lot of the time it's because we feel limited from society's list of do's and don'ts, and outside opinions clouding our own.  Therefore we are caused to pursue things that don't truly make us happy, when life is all about the journey, not the destination.  My work acts as reminders to be positive and mindful as we go through our days, so that we can ultimately realize and discover what we are meant to be doing.  Only that will bring us true peace and happiness, and our inner Wanderers of Life to enjoy the journey as we walk it.

Art with a Twist!

Meet Melissa Sweeney from Melissa Sweeney Photography...
My name is Melissa Sweeney and I work as a photographer in Knoxville, TN. I do mostly nature and travel photography but also do portrait photography locally. Before making my home in Knoxville earlier this year, I lived in Memphis, TN where I studied Anthropology and Spanish at The University of Memphis. Before that, I grew up outside of Cleveland, Ohio in Shaker Heights, Ohio.

I have been doing photography as a serious hobby and as a business for about eight months. I officially launched my business in August of this year. But before that, I always enjoyed photography on a smaller scale.
I'm inspired by nature and unique places. No matter how many gardens or parks you visit, each one has something different to offer. I'm inspired by discovering and capturing what each place has to offer.

I've always loved photography and since I was a kid I've always loved any kind of crafting. I always sort of envisioned myself doing something creative and selling my work at shows, although for a long time I didn't have an idea what type of art I would get into. But during college I was focused on academics, getting work experience, and trying to figure out what I wanted to do as a career, so I developed a different perspective and was more focused on stability rather than passion. After graduating, I quickly realized that working a 9-5 at a job I wasn't passionate about wasn't for me. At that point I wanted to pursue something more creative and find what my passion was. Then earlier this year, it finally clicked. I always found myself taking photographs everywhere I went and fascinated by photography. It only made sense to pursue it. Since then it has truly grown into my passion.
I started in photography before I really thought that I had talent because it was something I wanted to do so I was willing to do all I can to learn it and become talented. Once I started learning, after a few photo sessions I would look back at the images I took and I actually liked quite a bit of them. Then in sharing them with friends and hearing positive feedback, that's when I started to realize that I did have talent in it. It all just felt very natural.

My creative process starts by brainstorming interesting places to go, either ones that I've heard about from others or have learned about in research. But the most difficult part is choosing where to go first! There are hundreds of amazing places to visit within just a few hours of Knoxville, so often planning when to go to which location is the hardest part of the process. Next is to get out there and shoot anything that I find interesting and captivating. After that, it's a matter of deciding which works are the best and what products I want to turn each image into.
In five years I hope to be doing art and craft shows on a regular basis and to have grown a strong following in my Etsy shop. Additionally, I hope to be regularly submitting to magazines, contests, galleries, etc. I would also like to increase and develop the portrait photography side of my business.

The message behind my work is about connectivity and bringing joy. There's something that can be so peaceful about nature but it can also be used to craft powerful messages. I think each of my pieces has a different message behind them, but my general message is to get out and discover what's around you, to find peace in nature, and to let it bring some type of happiness to you.

For more of my work, please visit (www.melissasweeneyphoto.com) and my Etsy shop (www.etsy.com/shop/MelissaSweeneyPhoto).
Meet Susan Kurtz from Susie Kays...
I am a wife, a mother of three school age children, an artist and a treasure hunter.  My family has moved many times, and my crafting has kept me sane.  I have a Bachelor of Arts in Design, and I am also a graduate Jeweler Gemologist.  I have always had a love for sparkly items, starting from when I was very young.  I would sneak up to my Grandmothers Attic and try on her sequin dresses, and all of her rhinestones.  I love taking something, and creating something different with it.  I love Vintage items, and creating “new” from the old.

I have been in the jewelry industry since the 1990’s, and have been crafting as long as I can remember.  I inherited my Great Aunts jewelry collection, and that turned into my desire to create Brooch bouquets.  I have worked with many Brides, and have even been a featured artist on many bridal Blogs.  I create custom headpieces, centerpieces, bouquets and cake toppers.  I also love up-cycling, and creating new jewelry from Antiques.  You will find me selling my Jewelry items at the Avant Garde Shows, but can always create custom items.
I become inspired to create, by my general lack of non-creating.  Sounds strange, but if I do not create something for a few days, I get this urge.  One day it may be to sew, one day it may be to bead.  Vintage items inspire me, and I love turning them into something unique.

I left the Retail Diamond jewelry industry when I had children.  By creating my own items, it enabled me to stay at home with them.  I opened my Etsy store in 2011.
I have always been artistic.  I enjoy working with my hands, and my mother taught me to sew.  I have a good eye for design, and create things that I would want to have for myself.

A bouquet usually starts with a color, or a specific brooch that I will work around.  I group them by size and shape and work out an appealing design.  The jewelry is usually inspired by something that I would actually want to wear.
I would hope that I could still make a little “mad money” by selling my craft items.  I don’t need to be the biggest; I just hope to make a little extra from my work.  I enjoy working with Brides, and love being involved in such a special day.

The message behind my work: Create what makes you happy.

Please visit my Etsy store and my Facebook page!

Meet Holly Oyster from CroMagna Creations...
I’m a 45 year old mother of 2 and co-owner of a successful industrial service company.   I left behind a career in Classical Archaeology during the 90’s when I burnt out on my PhD, but i still dabble by volunteering for regional digs, and I keep in touch with my old crew on the dig in Turkey.  I’ve traveled extensively in Greece, Turkey and Egypt, and I know 7 languages, although most of them are very rusty now due to lack of use.
I learned to crochet when i was a child, taught by my mother.  I did little with it then, and forgot most of what I knew.  Then when I was 36 and pregnant with my daughter, my stepdaughter needed a new blankie because she was no longer permitted to bring hers to our house from her mom’s.  I had a family friend come over and re-teach me, and I took to it immediately.  My daughter is now 8, and I’ve been going non-stop since.
What inspires me to create.. color, texture, and difficulty - I love bright cascading colors, and I’m a sucker for any high quality yarn that uses them.  I find a yarn with a lovely feel, using bright or complimentary colors, and I can’t wait to find a use for it.  Besides that, i’m always looking for a challenge - if a pattern is too easy, I grow bored quickly and I struggle to finish the project.  I’m always looking for the next, most challenging project, and often I design my own patterns because I can’t find anything like what I see in my head.

My creative process..
Oddly enough, the cliche about the artist waking up with a sudden brainstorm is very very accurate.  If i’m stumped on a project, and i can’t figure out how to do something I want to do, I often have the idea pop fully formed into my head when i’m laying down just falling asleep.  For instance, I was working on a baby-doll type tank top for myself, and i didn’t like the way the pattern was written for the back and straps.  I kept playing with it, but nothing worked the way I wanted.  I laid down for a nap that day (my daughter was a toddler at the time) and as I drifted to sleep, the back and strap design popped into my head, and i immediately know it would work exactly the way i wanted.  I finished it the following day.  More than once I’ve had to get up and sketch out what I visualize so that i won’t forget it.
My five year plan.. I mostly create and vend in order to share what i do with others.  I’m not expecting to get rich, i’m not expecting to open an online store and sell large qualities of anything I create.  I enjoy sharing what I’ve created and getting feedback on it.  i love interacting with the other vendors and getting their take on what I do.  i LOVE seeing people appreciate my work and really enjoy when they ask questions about it.  If anything, I’d hope that in 5 years I will have a few published patterns that will sell moderately well and that I can help others learn the versatility of crochet and that you don’t have to be a knitter to be able to create beautiful, high-quality items from yarn.

The message behind my work: beauty, originality, self-reliance. I vend to sell the items I will be making anyway out of love of the craft…and so I can justify buying more yarn.  :)

My name is Karlisha Anderson from Sensuous by Karli...
I was born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio. I graduated from Cleveland School of the Arts in 2003.  My focus was visual arts and photography.  I am a breast cancer survivor and I have been in remission for 3 years now.  I also have multiple sclerosis which prevents me from working a traditional job five days a week. Currently, I am a stay at home mom. Although I love being at home taking care of my family, there is so much more I would like to do with my life.  I love art!

I am a creative person and I love helping people.  So in March of 2015 I started Sensuous by Karli.  I want customers to experience the bliss that emerges when they see, touch and smell products created by Sensuous.
My current product line includes scented candles and handcrafted candle holder sets.  My goal is to expand my product line early 2016 and in 5 years, I dream of being a household name. I want to open a few boutiques throughout the state of Ohio to showcase my work.

This is the first Avant-Garde Art & Craft Show I will be participating in and I hope it won’t be the last.  I am very excited about this experience and I look forward to seeing the smiling faces of new people.

I am a self-taught photographer utilizing the skills and fundamental elements from several photography classes I have attended. I also continue to study books and online sources, and gain knowledge from the ever-so-fun experimentation of my lovely little camera. I hold a Bachelor’s from the University of Akron in Interdisciplinary Anthropology, along with a certificate in Asian Studies. I also have studied abroad in Japan with Temple University Japan in the fall semester of 2006.
Miechelle Photography became official and launched on May 9, 2014. In August of 2014, I photographed my first wedding and have also have conducted unique photo-sessions locally for couples, families, individuals, and pets since then. Along with sessions, I love taking pictures of everything found in nature. I very much enjoy this hobby and in hopes to one day make it into a full-time business.  I’m currently in the process of upgrading my website for not only my 1 year anniversary, but to grow the website for my growing clientele.
I have attended one of Avant-Garde Art & Craft Shows last year and loved the atmosphere; this is my first time as a vendor! I’m originally from the area (currently living in Canal Fulton) and cannot wait to be back in Akron!

Meet Loraine Belknap from Loraine's Sunshine Designs...
I am happily married to my high school sweetheart for 33 years! I have one son and truly blessed with twin granddaughters and our newest addition, our first grandson! I have lived most of my life in Akron Ohio. A very important part of my life is to help others and I enjoy teaching craft classes at a local woman's shelter. God is always blessing me for helping.

This will be my first craft show with Avant-Garde and I am so excited about it and looking forward to many more.

As long as I can remember I have loved crafts...I was born with it. Sewing was my biggest hobby. I can't think of a craft that I have not tried at least once.  I built a huge dollhouse that was so big it almost didn't fit through the doorway!  I decided it was time to try something different than sewing....I loved looking at the beads at the craft stores and thought I wish I could make jewelry...and after trying it about eight years ago,  I couldn't do it! And... I didn't enjoy it! But, I loved jewelry and I thought I would love to make my mom something nice because she was always looking for certain colors. I decided to try it again..... those beads were too pretty to not give it one more try! I thought, "I can do this!" and I tried it again. After my first necklace, I was in love with it! I started out making jewelry for my mom, and I never gave up! I worked hard and read everything I could get my hands on about jewelry making. My mom now has a huge jewelry collection and always shows me when she is wearing something that I made for her!

It has been two years since I bought my first jewelry craft kit and I thank God for blessing me with this talent! My husband remodeled our basement which is now my craft room ....it is my escape place. When I get started on a project, I get so involved in it that I forget there is a world out there! I am thankful for a supporting husband and my parents who are always encouraging me.

My message behind my work is to have fun and make each piece of jewelry special and I thank God for giving me this talent that I love so much. In five years I hope to be participating in more craft shows and having my own website and selling more online!

Meet Megan from Meg's Creations...
My name is Megan and I am currently a student studying Dentistry. I am very passionate about art and painting different landscapes and famous cities. I am a proud advocate for the National Eating Disorder Association, and I am very happily engaged to my fiancé, Cameron.

I started painting in 2014. At first, I thought I was terrible! As I kept trying and painting different things, I became better at using paint techniques. From there, friends and family members began asking to buy some of my work.
I am inspired by many things and people. Painting offers me a sense of accomplishment and purpose. Aside from my goal of dental assisting, I feel that my hobby of painting is something that defines me.I am always inspired by the love I feel for my boyfriend and for the Eating Disorder sufferers who need a lift-me-up picture!

I got into crafts last year while I was in college. My roommate was a very avid painter and I loved her work. We became best friends and we paint together all the time now.
My creative process is very laid-back. I look online and find photographs of cities or monuments that I could see hanging in someone’s home. I always think about the person buying the picture. What kinds of colors would be in their home? What is the lifestyle like of the customer? All of these things play a role in creating my next piece, even though I haven’t met the customer yet. I particularly use acrylic and/or tempera paint on all my pieces.

My goal is I hope to still be painting in 5 years and selling my work to more and more people! All I want is to make people happy with my artwork. If that is accomplished, then my work is complete!

Meet Kristen Cargill from Garden Bling by Kristen...
What is “garden bling” you ask? Well, think of all your pretty potted plants, lush and vibrant garden… Oops, maybe you’re like me and a green thumb isn’t your thing. O.k., think of sitting outside looking at your sad plants and add some gorgeous, dangling beads and crystals to sparkle the look. Whether it’s basket bling, wind chimes, or sun catchers, Garden Bling is made to brighten the mood of any dreary day indoors or outdoors!

My adventure into Garden Bling started during the long, bitter-cold winter season of 2013-2014. The weather was enough to destroy a garden-lover’s spirit and I was no exception. So, to cure my winter blues I decided to brighten things with be-dazzling decorations for my windows and yard. Dreams of warmer days and beautiful skies inspired me to decorate with colorful, sparkling beads and solar lights. My inner diva demanded me to make outdoor chandeliers and things that would sparkle even if the skies were gray and cloudy. Creating things with beads and crystals became so therapeutic that my yard was starting to look like a bird’s Vegas destination. Also, my accountant (aka husband) wanted me to stop buying beads unless I was able to sell some of my items. So, I opened up an Etsy shop and hoped for the best. I’ve sold quite a few pieces online; but, I’ve missed the personal experiences of meeting others so I’m going to broaden my horizons!
This is my first venture in an Avant-Garde event, or any art/craft show for that matter. Hopefully, people will enjoy my work enough to overlook my inexperience as a seller. I’m excited that others will personally see the true beauty of my items because pictures can’t do them justice.  Let’s just hope that I can figure out the business side of my trade as well as I’ve taught myself how to do beading. I need to continue financing my “therapy”.
By nature, I love sparkly jewelry and be-dazzled products. Unfortunately, I never learned to make jewelry on my own and still don’t seem to have the patience for the intricacy of the work. I like to make things on a grander scale which my chandeliers and basket bling allow. There’s something about seeing a regular, plain hanging basket blinged out with crystals that makes me smile. I hope to bring that same feeling of whimsy and joy to others.

Like many artists, I’m not business-minded and simply enjoy what I do by making others happy. I hope you find my items to be unique and lovely for any indoor or outdoor living area! Please stop by my booth and take a look. I look forward to meeting you!

Meet Lisa Stone and Shelly Stutz from Family Jewels...
My name is Lisa Stone. I am a proud mom of five grown children and a six-month old baby girl Khalie that my husband and I are adopting. I also have seven grandchildren that I adore. In my free time I enjoy remodeling and decorating our country home we bought eight years ago. Life is busy being a fulltime mom, wife and jewelry maker!

My name is Shelly Stultz, I have been happily married for eight yrs. I love to live in my small country town where I raise my children. I have four children two grown and two still at home. I also have three grand baby girls. I work fulltime as a phlebotomist, jewelry maker and fulltime mom!
Shelly has made jewelry since childhood and has passed her techniques to Lisa. We are self taught. As jewelry makers, we are always creating jewelry in our minds or thinking of ideas. Our inspiration and creativity starts with our customer. Hearing how much they love our jewelry and how unique it is. That is such an inspiration in itself! The creativity comes natural to both Shelly and I. We create more unique and beautiful pieces of jewelry when beading together and are able to bounce ideas off of each other.
How we got started in business together.. In the spring of 2009, Lisa opened up a thrift store in North Baltimore. She was looking for some unique items when Shelly offered to make a few pieces of jewelry to put in her store. Lisa thought it was a great idea. Shelly made a few pieces each week. One day Lisa said to Shelly “that’s all you made!” So, Shelly asked Lisa to string one night to see why that’s all she made. That night was a lot of fun. It took Lisa 4 hours to make her first master piece. Lisa was hooked!!! We started stringing beads a few nights a week. We loved beading, spending time together and making jewelry so we decided to take our jewels on the road and became a traveling boutique! Time flies when you’re having fun!  This show is our second show with Avant-Garde. We are starting our seventh year in business. Our dream is to open up a small boutique some where in the city!

The message behind our work is that anything is possible when you open your heart and mind! Beautiful things happen when you least expect it. The possibilities are endless and the rewards are great! Just open your heart and mind who knows you may be able to create a master piece of your own!

Meet Rachael Lantvit from A La Natural...
I am a stay-at-home mom with a 5 year old daughter and 3 year old son. I truly enjoy being a homemaker and cooking from scratch, gardening, homeschooling, and just taking care of my family.

I’ve been crafting since I was a kid and it has always been a great outlet for me. I feel as if it is a stress reliever for me. This will be my first Avant-Garde Art & Craft Show!

My inspiration for my recent creations is nature. I feel most at home when I am outdoors exploring. I love being able to bring the beauty I see outdoors into my home!

I started crafting when I was a child making seed bead necklaces. I have since branched off into other areas and love to try my hand at whatever I want to explore.
My most recent craft endeavor was discovered after I made some decorations for my home and received many compliments.

My creative process starts with collecting branches and then determining ways I can integrate them into my living space. Sometimes I like to cover objects with branches, make wreaths, use branches as curtain rods, etc. The possibilities are endless!
In 5 years I would love to still be crafting as a creative outlet as well as a business and have my children be part of the process at that point.
The message behind my work is to get outside and enjoy the beauty!
